Weblog Awards Winner – Mouthfeel

Mouthfeel

is the winner of this Edition of the WordPress.com weblog award.

From the About Page:

Why name a poetry blog “Mouthfeel”? Because I believe that poetry is more fun if you read it aloud- whether it’s Dr. Seuss or Henry Wadsworth Longfellow- because you experience it with more than your eyes. Your ears get involved and your mouth is fully committed. And different words do feel different in your mouth. Don’t believe me? Say linoleum. Now say bupkes.

My Neighbor And I

October 12, 2008 <!–nadia–>

We don’t know our neighbors very well.  In fact, we hardly know them at all.  Most of the families living on our floor are locals, some of them are Lebanese, and I noticed a few Sudanese-looking kids.  Needless to say, we were surrounded by Arabic-speaking families.  That was until a year ago.

A few days before Eid last year, an Indian family moved into the apartment next door.  I don’t go out much, so I never knew when the Emirati family, who used to stay there, moved out.  One night, while I was home with my mother-in-law, the door bell rang.  It was an Indian woman, who greeted me by saying, “Hi, can I borrow your wiper?”

On (Mis)readings

Misreading – n. an incorrect reading

(Mis)readings is a blog featuring observations on events and texts from the vantage point of an eccentric, optically inconvenienced, and culturally dispossessed resident from the Southern Philippines. It is in short nothing more than the conceit of the blog’s author raising its ugly head online to propagate unlettered opinions to a public audience

The Big Stick

is the winner of this Edition of the WordPress.com weblog award.

Here is part of the post that caught our eye:

Elitism in Schools Isn’t Such a Bad Thing

… That’s when it began to click and I told them simply, “Unless you went there, you wouldn’t understand.” What I began to realize after that conversation was that beyond academics, beyond the talent of the students and teachers, what made my high school and others like it successful was a sense of elitism. We were told nearly every day that, “Excellence is our standard, not the exception.” We were told that we should thank our parents for sending us there. We were told that we represented our school wherever we were and we were to carry ourselves accordingly in the local community (we could receive disciplinary actions for a speeding ticket or a fight on the other side of town). …
